Multi Grammy winners Los Lobos with very special guest James Hunter are appearing in Edmonton March 28.

Los Lobos, who are definitely not Just Another Band From East LA, are perennial favourites with a three decade plus career. Their inimitable style is a blend of Blues, Rockabilly, Jazz, Latin and a dose of their own Mexican American heritage. Their most recent CD, released last year, continues their tradition of subtly challenging their fans with conscience-raising songs and stretching their musical boundaries. The CD, called The Town and The City, perhaps from the Jack Kerouac book of the same name, is a creative exploration with only touches of the bad boys of old but anyone who has experienced an evening of Los Lobos knows that they are always engaging “live” in concert.

LIZT ALFONSO DANZA CUBA

DATE: April 16, 17

TIME: 8:00pm

VENUE: Arden Theatre, 5 St. Anne Street, St. Albert

Eighteen impeccable female dancers, musicians and singers of Lizt Alfonso Danza Cuba present a flamboyantly entertaining display of their own Cuban-fusion style. Vibrant, elegant, and vividly theatrical, Alfonso's choreography seamlessly weaves together elements of ballet, Spanish classical dance, flamenco and Afro-Cuban movement.

Bursting onstage in a riot of rhythmic energy and precise coordination — combined with brilliant ruffles, emphatic heels and clicking castanets — Lizt Alfonso Danza Cuba creates an unforgettable dance explosion.

Cinco de Mayo

Date:  May 3

Time: 8:30pm

Venue:  Northgate Lions Senior Centre (7524 109 Ave)

Dance to X-Banda and the music of DJ Pachuco.  There will be a Mariachi band too.  Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the Mexican defeat of the French army at the Battle of Puebla.  It is not a celebration of Mexican independence.   The celebration of Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Latin American self-sufficiency and strength in the face of foreign intervention.  The defeat of the French at Puebla by a hopelessly under-equiped and outnumbered Mexican army inspired nationalist spirit in the new Mexican Republic, and told the European powers that Latin American freedom was a reality.

For more information, call 701-7777 or email: salsaisfun@gmail.com.

Latin Carnival
